10 Ways to Boost Creativity in 2023

Creativity is a multifaceted concept that can be difficult to pin down, but it is an essential element for many aspects of our lives, from artistic expression to problem-solving in the workplace. However, sometimes we may find ourselves in a creative rut, struggling to generate new and innovative ideas. Fear not, for there are numerous ways you can boost your creativity and reignite that creative fire! 🔥

1. Change Your Environment

Have you been stuck in the same environment for too long? A change of scenery can do wonders for your creativity. Take a walk outside and immerse yourself in nature, or move to a new workspace with a fresh perspective. Whenever I need to break away I take a walk with my wife and daughter around the local river. It does wonders. Even something as simple as sitting outside with s good book can refuel your imagination. You may find that a change in the environment can help you see things in a new light and inspire new ideas.

2. Take a Break

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of knowing when to step away. Working long hours without a break can lead to burnout and stifle creativity. If you find yourself wanting to just drone after a long day instead of working on your passions, just stop. This is a sure sign of burnout. You need to take care of yourself so you can get back to what’s important to you. Step away from your work for a bit and engage in a different activity. Whether it’s taking a short walk, reading a book, or listening to music, a break can help you clear your mind and come back with a fresh perspective. I personally like to dive into podcasts such as the Deep Dive with Ali Abdal or the Diary of a CEO. Reading an entertaining fantasy series such as the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson can be extremely enjoyable as well.

3. Exercise

Engaging in physical activity can help boost your creativity. Exercise helps get the blood flowing, which can help with creative thinking. It also helps reduce stress, which can be a major roadblock to creativity. I’m a glutton for punishment, so I like to go for long runs while listening to SPQR by Mary Beard. Lifting heavy things is also a surefire method. Try to incorporate some physical activity into your daily routine, whether it’s going for a run or doing some yoga. Yoga is also great for reducing back pain, FYI!

4. Get Inspired

Inspiration can come from anywhere, whether it’s nature, art, books, movies, or even conversations with others. Whenever Im looking for some inspiration for writing, I’ll turn to my favorite movies such as Shaun of the Dead, The Martian, and a whole list of others. That being said, don’t be afraid to look for inspiration in unexpected places and try to view things from a different perspective. You may be surprised by the new ideas that come to mind.

5. Try Something New

Trying something new can help spark creativity. It could be anything from learning a new skill to trying a new cuisine. When we try something new, our brains are forced to adapt and come up with new solutions, which can lead to new and innovative ideas. Picking up a guitar or learning how to draw are just a few skills I would recommend learning. I recently set out to write my own novel. This challenging form of writing has been a great experience, and I can’t wait to see what comes from it.

6. Get Creative With Your Tools

Experiment with different tools and materials to help spark your creativity. Try using something you’ve never used before. It could be a new writing tool, a new type of paper, or a new way of organizing your ideas. You may find that a new tool or material can help you think in new and creative ways. When I find myself in a writing slump I’ll put away the computer and grab a fountain pen and a notebook. This old-fashioned approach mixes things up just enough to spark some inspiration.

7. Write. Down. Everything!

Writing down your thoughts and ideas can help you keep track of them and also help you come up with new ideas. Carry a notebook with you wherever you go and jot down any ideas that come to mind. I have two places I like to keep a notebook: on my bedside table and in my backpack. Any crazy ideas or inspiring thoughts get a line in my notebook right before bed. It helps me sleep better too! An additional personal preference is the type of notebook. I personally get a lot of inspiration from using the Leichturm 1917 bullet journal. This recommendation came from Neil Gaiman in a podcast he did with Tim Ferris. Whatever your notebook of choice is, you’d do well. You may find that the act of writing helps you clarify your thoughts and come up with new and innovative ideas.

8. Brainstorm With Others

Brainstorming with others can be a great way to get creative ideas flowing. Gather a group of people and encourage them to share their ideas. You may find that hearing other perspectives can help you generate new and innovative ideas.

9. Set a Timer

Setting a timer can help you focus and keep you from going down a rabbit hole of ideas. Give yourself a set amount of time to brainstorm ideas and then move on to the next task. You may find that setting a time limit helps you stay focused and generate more ideas in a shorter amount of time. I personally recommend using the Pomodoro technique.

10. Embrace the Idea of Failure

Don’t be afraid to try something, even if it doesn’t work out. Embracing failure can help you come up with new and creative ideas. When we embrace failure, we free ourselves from the fear of making mistakes and are more willing to take risks and try new things.

These are just a few ways to boost your creativity. Remember, creativity is a journey, not a destination, and it requires practice and patience. What other methods do you use to get your creative juices flowing? Share your ideas with me 🤘
